One of the underappreciated advantages of staying in Vellore is the number of compelling day trips reachable within 100 km. Whether you have a free afternoon between hospital appointments, a day off during a multi-week medical stay, or are planning a leisure itinerary around Vellore as a base — the options are genuinely diverse.
Yelagiri Hills — 50 km • 1-Hour Drive (Top Recommendation)
Yelagiri is a small hill station rising to approximately 1,000 metres above sea level. Its cool climate, pine-scented air, and manageable scale make it a refreshing contrast to Vellore's warm plains. The Punganoor Lake at the centre of the Yelagiri township is ideal for a morning walk or paddleboat ride. The Swamimalai Hills trek offers a 4–5 km climb with views of the surrounding valley — manageable for most guests in good health.
Hogenakkal Falls — 100 km • 2-Hour Drive
Hogenakkal Falls on the Kaveri River is one of South India's most dramatic natural water features. The falls are at their fullest July to October. The coracle boat rides through the canyon gorge are genuinely memorable. Hogenakkal is also known for medicinal fish spas and freshly fried river fish at stalls along the waterfront. This is a full-day excursion — leave BLOFT Hotel by 8 AM, return by 7–8 PM for dinner at the restaurant.
Tiruvannamalai — 80 km • 1.5-Hour Drive
Tiruvannamalai is one of Tamil Nadu's most spiritually significant towns — home to the Annamalaiyar Temple, one of the Pancha Bhuta Stalas representing the element of fire. The gopurams are among the tallest in South India. Arunachala Hill rising directly behind the temple is circumambulated (girivalam) by devotees on full moon nights. For BLOFT Hotel guests already visiting for spiritual tourism, Tiruvannamalai is an obvious and worthwhile day extension.

At 1,000 metres above sea level and 50 km from BLOFT Hotel, Yelagiri offers a genuinely cooler climate — important for CMC families who need a restorative break from the hospital environment. Punganoor Lake walk (morning), Fundera Park (bird aviary, animal encounters, 9:30 AM–6:30 PM, adults Rs 325), local temples, and the Swamimalai Hills trek (4–5 km, moderate) complete a full day. Leave BLOFT Hotel by 8:30 AM after breakfast. Front desk arranges cabs.
Amirthi Forest — Wildlife and Waterfall (26 km, 35 min)
Established 1967, Amirthi Zoological Park sits at the edge of the Javadu Hills forest. Animals: spotted deer, Rhesus monkeys, crocodiles, pythons, wild cats, peacocks, red-headed parrots, eagles. The 1 km forest trek reaches Amirthi Falls — best July to October. 8 AM–5 PM, closed Tuesday. Entry Rs 20 adults, Rs 10 children. Combine with Yelagiri for a full day — Amirthi is easily on the route map.
Tiruvannamalai — Annamalaiyar Temple and Arunachala (80 km, 1.5 hrs)
One of Tamil Nadu's most spiritually significant towns. Annamalaiyar Temple — one of the five Pancha Bhuta Stala temples — is vast, ornate, and active with daily pujas. Arunachala Hill's 14 km Girivalam circumambulation is best attempted early morning or during full moon nights when tens of thousands of pilgrims walk together. Ramana Maharshi's Ramanasramam ashram attracts visitors from across the world. A genuinely transformative full-day excursion from Vellore.
Kanchipuram — Silk and Sacred Temples (120 km, 2 hrs)
One of Hinduism's seven sacred cities and South India's silk capital. The 8th-century Kailasanathar Temple and Kamakshi Amman Temple are architectural masterpieces. The silk weaving workshops and showrooms along Kanchipuram's main streets are part of the visit — genuine Kanchipuram silk at source prices, far below Chennai showroom rates. A long day trip or overnight for those with flexible schedules.
Hogenakkal Falls — South India's Niagara (100 km, 2 hrs)
The Kaveri River drops through a dramatic rocky gorge at Hogenakkal, with coracle boat rides navigating between the falls the signature experience. Local fish restaurants specialising in river fish fried and curried are the post-swim meal tradition. Hogenakkal is most spectacular July through October. Local bus from Vellore bus stand or dedicated cab arranged through BLOFT Hotel. A full-day excursion — leave by 7:30 AM, return by 7:00 PM.
