Vellore Fort stands on the banks of the Palar River as one of the finest examples of military architecture in South India. Built in the 16th century by Vijayanagar king Chinna Bommi Nayaka, the fort was subsequently held by the Bijapur Sultans, the Marathas, and eventually the British East India Company — each leaving their mark on its structures and its history.
The fort is most famous in Indian history for the Vellore Mutiny of 1806 — a revolt by Indian sepoys against the British, now recognised as an early and significant precursor to the larger 1857 uprising.
What to See Inside Vellore Fort
- Outer Walls and Moat: The fort's granite walls rise approximately 10 metres, surrounded by a wide moat once filled with water and reportedly stocked with crocodiles. The engineering is impressive from the south approach — a popular spot for photographs in the early morning light.
- Jalakandeswarar Temple: The crown jewel of the fort complex. A fully functioning 16th-century Shiva temple with ornate Vijayanagar-era mandapam, intricately carved pillars, and a large gopuram. Daily pujas are conducted — the morning aarti is particularly atmospheric. Resident peacocks wander the inner courtyard.
- British-Era Armoury and Church: The fort contains structures from the British period — an armoury and a small church — that reflect Vellore's colonial history as a significant garrison town.
- Government Museum (Inside the Fort): A museum with artefacts from the fort's multiple historical periods — bronze sculptures, weapons, coins, and documents. It operates from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM and remains closed on Fridays.

- Timings: The main fort complex is accessible from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. The internal temple grounds operate from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM daily.
- Entry fee: Entrance to both the main fort ramparts and the inner temple is completely free. Nominal parking charges are applicable at the gate.
- Photography: Permitted across the fort complex grounds. Strictly restricted inside the temple inner sanctum.
- Dress code: Visitors must dress modestly to enter the Jalakandeswarar Temple complex. Footwear must be removed at the temple storage counters.
- Best time to visit: 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM before the afternoon heat peaks. Early morning light provides exceptional clarity for landscape photography.
